Apple Acres Farm

Camp site in the woods with Solo stove and screened tent

A little slice of farm life

Craving a little R&R and possibly some time hanging out with cute farm animals? Or simply looking for a comfortable and relaxing place to unwind after a busy day exploring? We invite you to stay with us in our seasonal, off-grid studio loft or enjoy the peace of camping in the heart of our Sugar Bush.

Our small-scale, family farm is nestled into the forest of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Despite being just minutes from downtown Houghton, the Michigan Tech Trails, and the Keweenaw Peninsula, guests will feel immersed in nature as soon as they turn onto our winding and scenic driveway (yes, we do receive compliments about the beauty of our driveway!). For those traveling through the UP, we are centrally located between the Porcupine Mountains and the Marquette area.

We welcome guests to enjoy what the farm has to offer - from taking a casual stroll to visit our Nigerian dwarf goats and check out the apiary, to feeding the chickens, or to simply enjoying some downtime on the deck overlooking the gardens. To help orient you and make you feel more at home, we offer guests a complimentary farm tour

We are happy to accommodate your needs, whether that means having a low-key and beautiful place to stay for the night or learning more about the happenings of our off-grid, regenerative farm. Not sure if a farm stay is your thing? Check out what some of our past guests had to say about their experiences in the guest reviews below.

Our studio loft farm stay is simple yet modern. The 500 sq. ft. loft offers a private entrance and deck, which our two Nigerian dwarf goats enjoy visiting! The open floor plan and farm-themed artwork (made by family and friends!) provide a cozy space for guests to relax and experience off-grid, farm living. The Studio loft sleeps up to four people on a comfortable queen bed and futon and offers a fully equipped kitchen.

Relax and unplug in this rustic off-grid, wooded retreat. Tucked in the heart of our maple syrup Sugar Bush, the camp site includes a deck with Solo stove and screen tent. This camping retreat is perfect for those seeking a peaceful space to unwind and reconnect with nature. Tents and campers are welcome along with their leashed pet(s)!

We love hosting folks on the farm! Lucky for us, our guests are amazing and enjoy experiencing our off-grid farm stay... including the chicken and goat greeting committees.

Some guests are simply looking to unplug from the daily grind and appreciate the peaceful surroundings of the farm, while others appreciate having a cozy and conveniently located place to relax in between their action-filled adventures. Whatever your travel needs, we'd love to have you stay with us at the farm!

“Heather’s hospitality, responsiveness, and flexibility was unparalleled— I couldn’t have asked for more. If you’re in the area, stay here. The location is a beautiful waypoint to explore both the Porcupine Mountains as well as the Keweenaw Peninsula.”

“Heather and Caleb have created a wonderfully peaceful retreat that is still easily accessible to Houghton and Hancock. The house is cozy yet spacious and modern, and we found it had everything we needed to be comfortable. We truly loved all the sustainable practices they have adopted, especially the solar panels and the adorable chicken flock.”

“This is a fantastic place to stay in Houghton. Incredible host and a sustainable farm. We will be back and hope to support this incredible venture for years to come.”

Wonderful - that described our stay! If you're looking to a beautiful place to relax and recharge this is it!! Enjoyed learning about life off grid - and they have chickens!!! You won't regret staying here!

“The farm stay was amazing! We were welcomed with a farm tour and local recommendations for our stay. The studio loft was spotless and felt really cozy. Not to mention the adorable goats and chickens. This is a great place to stay!”

“We really enjoyed our stay here. The space is exactly what it looks like in the listing, and it's very clean. It was hot during our stay, but there was a great breeze through the studio. Beds were very comfortable! We loved spending time with the chickens! Heather is a great host!”

“Amazing stay. Heather accommodated our last minute changes and welcomed us to a beautiful tour around her farm. Very close to Houghton yet far enough to feel like you are off the grid. Love the promotion of energy efficiency in the design. Could not imagine having my first experience in the Keweenaw peninsula without staying here!”

“We had such a great time here! Would recommend to anyone. More than just a stylish space, it's a great experience on the farm - we really felt at home there and it was sad to leave the chickens. Great to explore the Keweenaw as well. Heather and Caleb are awesome hosts!”

“Great place to stay that is off the beaten path; super clean loft with all the amenities needed! Heather’s hospitality was above and beyond! She provided a nice tour of the farm and shared so much great information and the tea was outstanding. This place was a 10/10 for sure!”

“What a great place to stay in Houghton. It was a perfect location for our forays to The Porcupine Mountains and then to Copper Harbor. It is immaculately clean and tastily decorated while being off the grid, which was a fascinating learning experience for us. You will be greeted with a tour of the farm and if you are lucky you might see the two fawns that visited every day.”

Apple Acres Farm wooden mailbox sign

Looking to stay on the farm? Although we are conveniently located about three miles from downtown Houghton and Michigan Tech, we are a bit tucked away, which we love! However, it can make it a little tricky for visitors and guests to find us.

Our farm and farm stay are located at the top of our long and scenic driveway (i.e., we are not visible from the road). To help visitors and guests find our driveway, we have added a beautiful wooden sign to our mailbox. Feel free to openly admire this locally made artwork... we are pretty smitten with it ourselves!
